FUTURE LAND USE PLAN

City Council adopted the City's first Future Land Use Plan on Tuesday, September 7, 2004.  The Plan will guide the physical development of the City over the next twenty years and will be used to make future rezoning, capital improvement project and development regulation decisions.

The plan was developed following a series of more than 80 input meetings.  Staff received input from more than 600 citizens.

As part of the Future Land Use Plan process, staff has prepared plans for four major road corridors: Carolina Beach Road, College Road, Market Street and Oleander Drive.  The Corridor Plans will support and enhance the Future Land Use Plan by providing more specific policy guidance for future rezoning proposals, long-term capital expenditures and potential regulatory changes.

What is a Future Land Use Plan?
The City of Wilmington has developed a Future Land Use Plan intended to guide development and redevelopment in Wilmington through 2025. It builds on the existing Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) Land Use Plan and will provide more detailed guidance for land use decisions.

Wayne Clark, Development Services Department Director, says proactive long-term planning is a challenge, but can be done. “We are working to shift the community from a focus on What is good for ME – NOW to What is good for US in the LONG TERM”, said Clark . “Through this planning process, Wilmington will minimize choices and changes made in isolation and without thought for the context of the whole community. This is an immensely challenging task and requires extensive citizen support.”
