WILMINGTON TREE COMMISSION

Mission Statement
The Commission shall promote and endorse programs and policies to support our Urban Forest, shall increase public education, and shall establish awards and recognition programs as incentives to encourage a healthy and attractive natural environment for the City of Wilmington.

Our Roots
Recognizing the need to protect and promote our urban forest, the City of Wilmington’s City Council established the Wilmington Tree Commission on April 16, 1996.

13 members:  (9) City residents, (3) ex-officio members with (1) each from Development Services, Public Services and (1) the City's Urban Forester, and (1) member of the City Council.  Each member is appointed by the City Council for a term of not more than (3) years.  No member appointed by the Council shall be eligible to serve more than (2) consecutive terms.  Any vacancies will be advertised on GTV and local papers.

Meetings:  Held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 8:30 a.m.
Location:   First floor conference room – City Hall – 102 N. 3rd Street

Committees and Events
Tree Awards: Annual presentation of awards in (9) categories to recognize outstanding tree preservation, overall landscape design and commitment to maintenance.

Wilmington Heritage Tree Program:  Program is dedicated to the identification and preservation of heritage trees within the City of Wilmington.  Heritage trees are those, which because of their size, age, rarity, overall beauty or historical significance represent an important aspect of the City’s history or natural landscape.

Greening Neighborhoods:  Planting a tree is an attempt to make our community a better place to live and an expression of pride in our City.
