Household Trash Collection

The City of Wilmington provides curbside trash pick up for all residents within the city limits.  A choice of two cart sizes is available, depending on your trash volume.  By maximizing the amount you recycle, your household may require only a small cart.

The monthly rates include weekly refuse, recycling, and yard waste collections as well as bulky item collection on an as-needed basis (call 341-7875 to schedule).  At the present time, the fee for the regular sized (maxi) cart is $21.95 a month and for the mini cart the fee is $18.50 a month.

Household trash that will not fit in the cart must be bagged and have an orange extra trash sticker attached.  A minimum of 12 stickers are sold at the Office of Solid Waste Management and will be charged to your next trash bill.  Bagged trash outside the cart without an orange sticker will not be picked up.  We recommend keeping extra stickers on hand for that unexpected heavy trash week.

Trash will be picked up at least once a week, even during holiday weeks.  The holiday trash pick-up schedule will be announced in the newspaper and on the TV and radio.

Follow These Rules to Ensure Timely Service Delivery: 

• Have your trash cart at the curbside, no later than 7am on your day of service
• Promptly remove your trash cart from the public right of way after service
• Do not leave extra trash bags beside your trash cart without an orange "extra trash" sticker attached
• Properly prepare your trash bags, to ensure against spillage
• Do not pile up bulky items, until you have called our office to schedule a pick up

We are unable to pick up:

• Dirt, rocks or commercial demolition materials
• Hot Ashes
• Paint liquids (paint cans must be dried out completely before placing them in your trash cart)
• Hazardous Materials
• Chemicals or pesticides
• Medical waste
• Flammables
• Tires  (however you may take up to 5 tires to the New Hanover County landfill to dispose of at no charge)
