WHAT IS A WATERSHED?

A watershed is an area of land that drains runoff to a particular stream, river, lake or waterway. Everyone lives, works or plays in a watershed.

Watershed Diagram

Check out the WILMINGTON WATERSHEDS MAP to see which watershed you live in and the destination of runoff flowing from your property.

  • For instance, if you live in the Hewletts Creek Watershed, runoff from your property will drain into Hewletts Creek, then eventually into the Intracoastal Waterway.
  • If you live in the Burnt Mill Creek Watershed, runoff from your property will drain into Burnt Mill Creek, then eventually into the Cape Fear River.

When you locate your watershed on the main map, choose the name of your watershed (from the drop down menu below) to see your watershed in more detail.   Please allow a few moments for each map to open!  Pop-up blockers need to be turned off.
