The county's first splashpad, located adjacent to the Northside pool at 750 Bess Street across from the Wilmington Police Department headquarters, is now closed for the season. It is scheduled to reopen in April 2009.
During the off-season, additional rubber pads will be installed to the floor of the splashpad. For safety reasons, visitors are also asked to wear rubber-soled shoes when using the facility .
The $400,000 project, funded by the 2006 Parks and Greenspace Bond, was completed under budget and included construction of the splashpad as well as renovations to the Northside pool bathroom facilities. There is no fee for admission.
The splashpad is a 40-foot by 30-foot concrete slab covered with a skid-resistant rubber surface and features interactive water play for all ages. It is a fully automated, zero-depth recreational system that includes geysers, water cannons and dumping buckets.
