Stormwater garden installed

Post Date:12/05/2016 2:30 PM
Glen Meade Bioretention AreaCity of Wilmington crews installed a large scale rain garden – called a bioretention area – in Wilmington’s Glen Meade neighborhood at 2124 Lynnwood Drive. The installation will treat 33 acres of polluted stormwater runoff from the surrounding area. It will help remove harmful bacteria by naturally filtering polluted stormwater runoff through soil and plants before it flows into nearby Hewlett’s Creek.

The installation is part of the city’s Heal Our Waterways program. The city partnered with the NC Coastal Federation and the NC Cooperative Extension to obtain a grant that paid for the property. Along with the site installation, the Glen Meade community is receiving information about the purpose and need for the project and educational signs will be posted onsite.
