Wilmington's Arson Task Force Team was recently awarded the prestigious 2011 Investigative Team of the Year Award by the North Carolina chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators. The task force is made up of members from the Wilmington Fire and Police Departments, as well as a representative from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and from the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation.
The team was nominated for this honor by Wilmington's Fire Marshal, Battalion Chief Sammy Flowers. Chief Flowers oversees the team and based his recommendation mainly on the outstanding closure rate of illegal or incendiary fire. The task force together increased the percentage of cases closed from 18% in 2010 to an impressive 88% in 2011.
The task force team is an excellent example of the superb results that can come out of a joint cooperation between the fire department and law enforcement.
