The new 9,000-square-foot fire station at Empie Park is almost 75% complete. Following completion of the outside of the facility, crews will work to finish the interior of the garage and administrative buildings. Construction began in August to replace the old fire station, which was demolished after mold was found in the building. The new station will have a design similar to the new Seagate Fire Station on Greenville Loop Road as well as an additional 880 square feet to better accommodate today’s larger fire equipment. The $2 million project is on schedule to be complete this summer.
Upon completion, an artifact from the World Trade Center will be permanently displayed at the station in a memorial garden as a tribute to Wilmington’s fallen firefighters.
