Changes coming to recycling program

Changes coming to recycling program

Beginning in December of this year, city solid waste customers will have the option of using roll-out carts for recycling, similar to those used for trash. The carts, which will be offered in the same sizes as the trash carts now in use, will allow the city to change pickup of recyclables from once a week to once every two weeks. There will be no change in pick-up fees and pick-up days will remain the same.

In the coming weeks, all city solid waste customers will receive a letter from the city, asking them to identify their preference for which size cart they would like to use. After the surveys are received, the city will order the carts, which will be delivered to customers beginning in December, 2012.

In addition to providing more options to the customer, this change will save the city over $220,000 per year, due to the need to pickup only once every two weeks. This is also anticipated to increase the amount of recycled materials that the city is able to divert from the landfill by 15-20%.
