On June 22, more than 200 volunteers met at the city’s Portia Mills Hines Park for a day-long volunteer effort to construct a playground.
A ribbon-cutting and park dedication was held at the park, located at the intersection of 10th and Rankin streets. Portia Hines was a long-time community leader in the Northside area.
The event was sponsored by Blue Cross and BlueShield of NC which provided most of the funding, along with the national non-profit organization KaBOOM! KaBOOM is coordinating this and similar projects across the country.
The NHC Blue Ribbon Commission on the Prevention of Youth Violence, which is coordinated through the local United Way, led the initiative to get the park upgraded.
More than 100 volunteers from BCBS’s Durham offices joined local volunteers from the city, Corning, General Electric, UNCW, the New Hanover County School District, Wilmington Port Longshoremen and residents of the park’s surrounding neighborhood. The volunteers also built benches, picnic tables and a shade structure.
