City Council Meeting Sept. 18

City Council Meeting Sept. 18

Tuesday, Sept. 18, City Council meeting, 6:30 p.m. at City Hall
Items of interest included:

  • Public hearing on a voluntary annexation request to bring 10 acres into the city limits and rezone it to allow for development of a 94-unit townhome development on Gordon Road. The property is about ½-mile outside the current city limits in an area that is already heavily populated. The city has received several voluntary annexation requests over the last several months as the demand for multi-family housing increases and developments such as this are much more in keeping with the city’s urban zoning requirements.

  • Consideration of an agreement with the Atlanta Braves/Mandalay that outlines terms for a 20-year collaboration to build and operate a minor league baseball facility; this follows Council’s approval last month to put a $37 million bond referendum on the Nov. 6 ballot for the cost of the stadium and land. Click here for more details on the proposed agreement.

  • Consideration of a request to assign four city police officers to serve as school resource officers for New Hanover County schools. The city has provided officers to the school district since 2008 in an effort to help provide safety in schools in the short term, as well as a way to help reduce crime in the long term. The assignment costs the city $210,000 each year, with the school district reimbursing the city for approximately 1/3 of the cost, or about $70,000 a year. In addition, the school district receives more than $750,000 a year from proceeds generated by the city’s SafeLight camera program.
