Cross-City Trail public meeting

The city will hold a public meeting at 5 p.m. on Thursday to discuss the section of the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail between John D. Barry Drive on S. 17th Street and Wade Park, located off Waltmoor Road. The meeting will be held at Halyburton park, located at 4099 S. 17th St.

Anyone interested is encouraged to drop by between 5-6 p.m. to learn more about the project. Staff will be on hand to answer questions. There will be a presentation at 6 p.m. that will give a summary of public input received at an initial meeting on Aug. 23, conceptual drawings of the recommended design, and a timeline for the project. 

The city received $525,000 from BlueCross BlueShield NC to help fund construction of this section. The city is also working with the NC Department of Transportation to secure the remaining funds needed to complete the improvements.

The trail is now more than 11 miles long. When complete, it will be 15 miles long and stretch from Wade Park in the southern end of the city to the Heide-Trask drawbridge over the Intracoastal Waterway.
