Cross-City Trail fully funded!

Cross-City Trail fully funded!

At their meeting on Oct. 16, Council officially accepted $550,000 from BlueCross BlueShield NC for the construction of one of the last remaining sections of the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail. Acceptance of this gift fully funds the 15-mile trail.

Wilmington was one of only three North Carolina cities selected to receive funds from BCBSNC for this type of project.

The funding will be used to help complete the final phase of the trail that will stretch from John D. Barry Drive on S. 17th Street to Wade Park off Waltmoor Road. As part of an arrangement with BCBS, the city agreed to provide funding for the remainder of the project.

The city has already received $4 million in federal funding and more than $1 million in state funds for the trail.

Work is currently underway on two other sections of the trail: the section that will connect the Teal Street Bridge with Eastwood Road and the Shipyard Connector.
