The Wilmington Police Department sponsored their annual holiday event, "Santa Cop" on Thursday, December 20, 2007. The event is a long and well-loved tradition. WPD has organized the yearly event for at least the past 17 years.
On Thursday morning, 43 police officers and other WPD employees were paired with 43 children for a morning of shopping. Santa Cop children are referred by caring adults (primarily DSS and school counselors) who determine that Santa could use a little extra help in giving the kids a happy Christmas.
This year's event is financed through a generous gift from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. Others helped, too. The District Attorney's office opted out of giving office gifts, and decided instead to donate the money to Santa Cop. In addition, WPD received support from the following businesses and organizations:
Sweet ‘n Savory
East Carolina Bank
Alex Hall, Attorney
Downtown Med Center
