Sixteen firefighting recruits were inducted into the Wilmington Fire Department on Friday, January 4 at 7 p.m. The ceremony was held City Council Chambers at City Hall.
The recruits all successfully completed the Recruit Academy offered by the WFD. The training, which runs 18 weeks for a total of 656 hours, is comprised of physical, practical and written examinations. The Recruit Academy takes place on an as-needed basis, or about once every two years. This academy began in September, 2007.
All graduates are now state certified as firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and some began active duty the morning of January 5. All 16 firefighters will be placed in various fire stations throughout the city.
