City Council Meeting Feb. 19

City Council Meeting Feb. 19

Tuesday, Feb. 19, City Council meeting, 6:30 p.m. at City Hall
Items of interest on the agenda included:

  • Public hearing and resolution about a business incentive grant for expansion of Castle Branch, Inc. If approved, the city would grant Castle Branch $50,000 a year for five years if the company successfully builds a $9 million headquarters facility and adds 400 employees. Castle Branch is a privately owned background screening company located across from Mayfaire.
  • On the agenda but expected to be continued to the next Council meeting: Public hearing and ordinance to modify the existing zoning conditions for a planned development on River Road called Riverlights. In 2009, the city annexed just over two miles of property for a mixed use development. Several modifications are being considered, including allowing more residential density and more time for completion of building construction and connector streets.
  • Resolution to change the city's voluntary annexation policy so that any requests for annexations into the city that don't touch existing city limits will not be accepted within six months if New Hanover County has already denied a special use permit or zoning changes. Council has been discussing proposed changes for several months.
  • Resolution authorizing a $637,000 contract to make repairs to the support pilings underneath the river walk at the foot of Market Street.
