On Tuesday, Mayor Bill Saffo and other members of the NC Metro Mayors Coalition met with Gov. Pat McCrory to lobby for legislation that will help the state’s largest cities. McCrory said this week that towns and cities are the economic engines that will fuel the state’s recovery. Along with economic development, the group discussed issues such as transportation, land use and tax policies.
Figures released this week by the American Commuting Survey using data from the US Census Bureau support McCrory’s position about cities. The survey found that more than 10,000 Brunswick County residents cross the Cape Fear River into New Hanover County each day to work, while about 9,000 Pender County residents commute to New Hanover County. The largest majority of jobs in the three-county area are located inside the Wilmington city limits. |
