Items of interest on the agenda included:
- Continuation of the public hearing and consideration of an ordinance for a new zoning district called UMX, Urban Mixed Use, from the March 5 meeting. Criteria for the proposed zoning district were developed over the past year with citizen input gathered from several public meetings. The proposed regulations are designed to encourage reuse and redevelopment of land and buildings located within the 1945 corporate limits. The regulations would encourage the construction of multi-story buildings set close to sidewalks that blend in with existing historic structures. For more information, visit wilmingtonnc.gov/umx.
- A resolution awarding a $1.2 million construction contract to repair/improve several miles of city roadways. This is the first project bid as part of the city's 5-year infrastructure improvement plan adopted as part of the 2012-13 budget. The roads that will be repaved/repaired as part of this project include Rose Avenue, Oriole Drive, 52nd Street from Oleander Drive to Park Avenue and Park Avenue from 52nd to Hinton Avenue. For more information on the 5-year plan, visit wilmingtonnc.gov/5yearplan.
- Resolution authorizing a $254,630 contract for construction of a 2,700-foot sidewalk that will run along the west side of Greenville Loop Road, connecting Bradley Creek Elementary School with the Greenville Village manufactured home community. The project is partially funded by a federal Safe Routes to School grant. Construction is expected to begin next month and be completed in August.
