Scam alert from WPD

Scam alert from WPD

The Wilmington Police Department is investigating complaints recently received from local businesses about a phone scam. According to the report, the business owners received demanding phone calls from solicitors alleging to be from Progress Energy.

This is a regional phone scam that has now hit our area. In each case, the caller threatens to turn off the electricity immediately unless the business pays by means of a prepaid cash card.

Progress Energy (now Duke Energy) officials have confirmed that the scam has been circulating for months.

According to Duke Energy, this information has also been released in Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Utility companies do not threaten customers.

Anyone who receives this type of call should refuse the demand and contact law enforcement. When in doubt, call the customer service number that appears on the bill.
