City Council Meeting Apr. 16

City Council Meeting Apr. 16

Tuesday, April 16, City Council meeting, City Hall, 6:30 p.m.
Items of interest on the agenda included:

  • Several presentations, including updates from the Wilmington Convention Center and the local Arts Council;
  • Approval of a five-year contract renewal with the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. to manage, operate and maintain Thalian Hall;
  • Allocation of $25,000 in additional funding for the annual July 4th fireworks celebration. The city and Battleship North Carolina have a longstanding partnership to host the celebration, which attracts more than 50,000 downtown visitors each year. The fireworks costs approximately $30,000. Traditionally, the city budgets $10,000 for the fireworks, with the Battleship contributing $5,000 and the remaining $15,000 coming from a title sponsor. In February 2013, the city learned that the title sponsor was dropping out, effective immediately. The staff is in the process of recruiting a new title sponsor, but funds need to be set aside now in order to make the necessary purchases. If another title sponsor is not found, the $25,000 in additional funding would come from the city’s food and beverage concession revenue.
  • Resolution to extend the city’s contract with the firm SMG to manage and operate the Wilmington Convention Center (WCC) for another two years, with the stipulation that the contract continue to be paid from the WCC’s operating budget, which receives funding from Wilmington’s hotel room occupancy tax revenues. The center’s operation and maintenance is NOT funded with property tax monies. The contract also includes a small award to be paid if SMG generates additional hotel room nights over prior years. The annual cost of the contract is just over $107,000 and is paid for out of the WCC operating budget.
