Convention Center 2012-13 review

Convention Center 2012-13 review

The number of events and people attending events at the Wilmington Convention Center (WCC) continues to increase in its third year of operation, according to information provided to City Council on April 16 by WCC General Manager Susan Eaton.

Highlights from the presentation:

  • The number of events at the WCC has already increased by 23% from 113 in fiscal year 2012-13 to 139 as of this month, with total attendance of 77,900 so far this year. (The fiscal year is July-June.)
  • Room occupancy tax (ROT) revenue collected by hotels in all of New Hanover County increased by 10% in 2012 and has increased by 6.65% so far this year.
    • ROT collected inside the city limits is up 9.30% so far this year.

  • More groups holding events at the WCC included overnight hotel stays by attendees, which helped increase the city’s ROT revenue that funds the center.
  • The center’s revenues and expenses are within the city’s financial projections, with operating costs covered by ROT funds as needed. No property tax dollars are used to operate or maintain the center.
