Repair work for a section of the Riverwalk at the foot of Market Street is now underway. Because there is no room in the area for a worksite to be established, a large barge has been brought in on the river at the foot of Market Street.
Over the next four months, 58 steel support beams underneath the Riverwalk will be replaced or repaired, along with repairs to the observation deck and the nearby Water/Market Street intersection. A crane will be used to lift the heavy beams into place. Most of the work will take place in the water below the Riverwalk using workers from a company specially trained in underwater repair work.
In addition, the tree planter and three oak trees in the nearby area will be removed. A temporary walkway will be installed until the Water Street and Riverfront Park Improvement project takes place next year. Some intermittent closures of the Riverwalk in this area are expected. The $637,000 project is part of the city’s 5-Year Infrastructure Improvement Plan.
