Proposals to build the city’s riverfront convention center have come in under bid. Seven companies submitted bids last week to build the convention center and parking deck.
The city’s construction estimate was $31.5 million. The low bid for the project was $28.2 million from J.M. Thompson Company of Raleigh. The city has contracted with the MBP firm to oversee the construction project. MBP is based in Virginia and also has offices in North Carolina, Maryland and Georgia.
Construction work has already begun on the nine-acre site on Nutt Street with piles being driven into the ground for the foundation of the center and adjacent parking deck.
City Council is expected to consider recommendations for a construction contract at their March 18 meeting.
