A plaque dedication and groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday, April 16 at the Maides Park site as expansion activity begins. The park is located at 1101 Manly Avenue, just off Princess Place Drive.
Mayor Bill Saffo and Jimmy Davis, chairman of the citizen‐based Friends of Maides Park committee, spoke at the event. Mary Mosely, a member of the Maides family, was also in attendance to unveil a monument placed in the park to commemorate the Maides family, who donated the land to the city in 1963.
The existing recreation center was built in the 1970s and work will begin next month to upgrade and expand the center by more than 1,300 square feet. The improvements are funded by $900,000 from the 2006 Parks and Greenspace bond and $450,000 from the city’s construction fund, for a total of $1.35 million. The improvements are expected to take about one year to complete.
Other planned improvements:
• shelter and restroom building (completed)
• athletic field improvements
• walking and biking trails
• playground
• mini shelters
• landscaping
• lighting and security lighting
• stormwater and drainage
• entrance sign
