The City of Wilmington, along with the entire nation, observed Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15. The Wilmington Police Department held a memorial service in honor of fallen officers in front of the WPD Headquarters at 615 Bess Street, near the future site of the WPD Police Memorial.
The ceremony included the placement of a memorial wreath and the roll call of police officers who have died in the line of duty throughout the Wilmington Police Department’s long history.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed each May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which the day occurs as National Police Week. The purpose is to honor all federal, state and municipal officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. The president ordered flags across the country to be flown at half-staff on May 15 in memory of those officers who gave their lives to protect others.
