The former petting zoo at Greenfield Lake recently received a new animal!
A living giraffe sculpture was unveiled at Greenfield Park on Saturday, June 28. The 12-foot high sculpture is crafted from rebar and was created by two teaching artists from DREAMS Center for Arts Education and their students. It has been seeded with ivy which will eventually grow to cover the giraffe in its entirety. The sculpture stands in an edible herb garden on the site of the former petting zoo, between the skate park and the tennis courts.
The project is a joint effort between the City of Wilmington, DREAMS and the Wilmington Art Association (WAA). DREAMS Center for Arts Education is a non-profit organization partially funded by the City that provides a creative outlet to disadvantaged youth between the ages of 8 and 17 who otherwise would not have access to an arts education.
The City teamed up with WAA and DREAMS before. In 2007, students and teachers completed a paint and mosaic mural on the side of a building at 6th and Castle streets and also completed trash can mosaics on Castle Street between 6th and 7th streets in the New Castle Street Art and Antique District.
