An indoor soccer program geared for kids ages 5-14 is now taking place at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. The program kicked-off August 4 at the MLK Center as several Hammerhead players put on an exhibition indoor game. After the exhibition game, the Hammerhead players and head coach David Irving put the new players through individual drills, beginning the process of teaching soccer fundamentals.
The goal of the program is to develop the soccer skills, discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship as well as expose the participants to sports and physical activity. The other goal is to identify children who are interested in becoming more involved in the sport and ultimately to provide a more advanced and competitive outlet for those individuals.
Now, after three weeks of practice under the guidance of staff and indispensable volunteer coaches, the indoor soccer season has begun. The season will last thru the middle of October.
Other upcoming athletic programs at the MLK Center include:
- Youth Tennis Lessons – beginning in September
- Adult Doubles Tennis Tournament – scheduled for October
- 35 and older Basketball League – scheduled to begin in November
- Youth (boys and girls) Basketball League – scheduled to begin in December
