Nine firefighting recruits were inducted into the Wilmington Fire Department on February 7. The ceremony took place in City Council Chambers at City Hall.
The recruits all successfully completed the Recruit Academy offered by the WFD. The training, which runs 18 weeks for a total of 656 hours, is comprised of physical, practical and written examinations. The Recruit Academy takes place annually, or on an as-needed basis. This academy began on September 29, 2008.
All graduates are state certified as firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs), and three of the recruits actually began active duty on their graduation day. All 9 firefighters have been placed in various fire stations throughout the city.
