Public Safety heroes save 8 women from fire

Public Safety heroes save 8 women from fire

Alert WPD Officer notices flames

Eight women were rescued from a burning house in the early morning hours of March 17 thanks to an alert Wilmington Police Department Officer.

Officer Robert Annette was driving to meet his supervisor at about 4:00 a.m. Tuesday morning when he spotted smoke coming from New Beginnings Recovery Home, located at 1842 Carolina Beach Road. Officer Annette pulled over to assist, and he was quickly joined by his supervisor, Sgt. Waymon Hyman.

Together they awakened the residents and evacuated the house. Officer Annette began banging on the front door while Sgt. Hyman alerted the occupants at the side door, instructing everyone to get out because the house was on fire. All eight of the women got out safely, and the Wilmington Fire Department arrived to put out the fire.

Flames began appearing from the second story within 30 minutes of the evacuation. The fire appears to have been caused by faulty wiring in the attic.

Congratulations to our Public Safety heroes in the Police and Fire Departments!
