The portion of Water Street between Market & Dock Streets is open again now that repair work on an underground bulkhead has been completed.
This portion of Water Street had been closed since January while 160 feet of bulkhead was being repaired to prevent further erosion of the river bank. The bulkhead, which is like a retaining wall, is located underneath the street and runs parallel to the sidewalk. Before the repair, small sink holes had appeared in the area and city engineers said it was important to repair the bulkhead before the situation became critical.
The $1 million project was completed on time and on budget.
