Independence widening project to begin this summer

Independence widening project to begin this summer

Approximately $2 million under estimate

City Council passed a resolution awarding a $4.6 million construction contract to widen a two-mile stretch of Independence Boulevard at their meeting on April 21.

Because of the slowing economy, construction bids were roughly $2 million less than the the project estimate. Construction is expected to begin in June. The widening project will provide for another route as north/south bound traffic increases in the future, particularly after the Skyway Bridge is constructed.

The project will

  • Widen Independence Boulevard between Shipyard Boulevard and Carolina Beach Road from 2 lanes to 4 lanes (with a southbound bicycle lane and a northbound wide outside lane)
  • Include an off-road multi-use path between Museum Drive and Croquet Drive (as part of the Cross-City Trail project)
  • Provide signalized pedestrian crossings at Independence Boulevard and South 17th Street
  • Include Museum Drive extension to Independence Boulevard
  • Provide a critical north-south alternative to South College Road
  • Ultimately be part of the link between the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway and the Cape Fear SkyWay Bridge

The project is partially funded by the 2006 Transportation Bond and is expected to begin this summer.
