Following are dates of interest for this week:
Tuesday, Jan. 5 - Front Street Improvement Project groundbreaking ceremony, 10:30 a.m. at Market/Front Street intersection
Speakers will include Mayor Bill Saffo and Cape Fear Public Utility Authority Board Chair Gene Renzaglia. This $1.8 million project will replace aging water and sewer pipes and enhance the streetscape with new sidewalks, crosswalks and landscaping in a two-block area of Front Street between Market and Chestnut streets. The project is a joint effort between the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority and the city and is expected to be completed in July, 2010.

Tuesday, Jan. 5 - City Council meeting, City Hall at 6:30 p.m.
Items of interest on the Jan. 5 agenda include:
- A $220,000 contract to design a 2.7 mile section of the Cross City Trail. This phase will begin at the South College/Randall Parkway intersection and continue around the edge of the UNCW campus to the Mallard Street/Hooker Road intersection. Design costs are funded by the 2006 parks bond.
- Rezoning 26 acres at the intersection of Greenville Loop Road and Oleander Avenue to allow for a mixed use development of single family homes, town homes and offices.
