The city's $4.67 million Independence Blvd. widening project is now over halfway complete. This project is part of the Transportation Bond passed in 2006.
The project involves the addition of two lanes of traffic, the installation of medians, updated signal systems, storm sewer work and multi-use paths. Paving should begin mid-April, weather permitting. The paving will begin at Shipyard Blvd. and head south to 17th St., then to Carolina Beach Rd. over the next 2 to 6 weeks.
Before paving begins, three existing 16-inch sanitary sewers have to be relocated. Once the paving is complete, traffic patterns will be switched so that work on the inside of the road where new medians will go can begin.
The project is on schedule to be completed at the end of August 2010.
