The city hosted law enforcement personnel from throughout New Hanover County on May 6 to break ground on the new Law Enforcement Memorial.
The Wilmington Police Recreation is heading up a fundraising effort to construct the memorial that will honor local law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. In a report to City Council at their May 4 meeting, Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous reported that the association needs to raise approximately $50,000 more before beginning construction. In his presentation, Evangelous highlighted officers who have died in the line of duty over the last several years. Sheriff Ed McMahon was also on hand.
