The city is nearing the completion of the 1.9-mile Independence Boulevard widening project. Beginning Saturday, Aug. 21, northbound and southbound traffic will be limited to the outer lanes of Independence Boulevard so that final median improvements and utility work can be completed.
The project involves the widening of Independence Boulevard between Shipyard Boulevard and Carolina Beach Road from two to four lanes to provide motorists with an alternative route to driving on busy South College Road. The $6.4 million project is funded by the 2006 Transportation Bond and city capital project funds.
The recently completed extension of Museum Drive from the Cameron Art Museum to Independence Boulevard and a part of the Cross-City Trail between the Cameron Art Museum and Croquet Drive were also part of the project. Pedestrian crossings will also be installed at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and South 17th Street.
The project is expected to be complete in October 2010.
