Wilmington City Councilmembers and New Hanover County Commissioners were on hand on September 26 at the groundbreaking ceremony for Olsen Park. The ceremony took place at 10:30 a.m. on the site of the future park.
ABOUT OLSEN PARK
The City purchased the 63+ acre Olsen property which, along with an adjacent 25 acres belonging to the County, will create one of the largest and most unique parks in the City or County.
The Olsen purchase will utilize and preserve a tract of land that has been a part of Peggy Olsen’s family for many decades. Olsen Park will be a tribute to her family and the agrarian history of our county. It will also be the most significant project to date utilizing bond referendum funds passed in 2006.
The development of Olsen Park creates a strategically located facility with a diversity of uses in a high growth area of the county. Its location adjacent to Interstate 40 and North College Road make it convenient for citizens and visitors alike.
The nearly 89 acre park will include:
- A 5-field softball/baseball wagon wheel-designed complex complete with concessions and rest rooms.
- Several multi-purpose fields with the capability of accommodating several
different sports and activities, sand volley ball courts, tennis courts, playgrounds
walking and hiking trails and other park amenities.
