The City of Wilmington, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) are coordinating on improvements to North 3rd Street.
The $9.4 million project involves the replacement of aging water and sewer lines, the placement of power and other utilities underground, and new street paving, sidewalks, curbs, lighting and traffic signals. The affected area stretches from Market Street north to Davis Street. The project is partly funded by the 2006 transportation bond with joint funding from CFPUA and the NCDOT.

Traffic on N. 3rd Street will be temporarily affected while the underground utility work takes place. Work will begin at Market Street and travel up N. 3rd Street to Davis and North Front streets. Temporary traffic detours to side streets may be needed during construction, especially when new pavement is installed. Intersections will remain partially open whenever possible.

Sidewalks directly in front of buildings will be replaced, however businesses will remain open and accessible.

The project is expected to last 13 months. Work will take place from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some night and weekend work.
