The City of Wilmington, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) and
North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) continue work on
improvements to North 3rd Street. Traffic impacts are as follows:
- Beginning November 28 at 7:00 a.m., eastbound traffic will not be able to pass through the Princess intersection. Westbound traffic will be forced to turn right or left. The closure is expected to last through the evening of Tuesday, November 29.
- Lane closures on the west side of North 3rd Street have been extended through the Grace Street intersection to allow for continued progress on installing underground utilities. Because of this closure, the no parking zone on either side of North 3rd Street has also been extended north to Walnut street until further notice.
- Left turns are not allowed off 3rd Street at the Princess, Chestnut and Grace street intersections until further notice. Motorists may use 5th Avenue as an alternate route.
The $9.4 million project involves the replacement of aging water and sewer lines, the placement of power and other utilities underground, new street paving, sidewalks, curbs, lighting and traffic signals. The affected area stretches from Market Street north to Davis Street.
The project began in August 2011 and is expected to last 13 months.
