City wins green award

City wins green award

In October, Wilmington was one of two cities to receive the Susan M. Burgess Sustainability Award by the N.C. League of Municipalities (NCLM). Wilmington was recognized for numerous sustainability initiatives. Here are a few of the highlights of things the city has done recently to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly:

  • Making efforts to improve fuel efficiency, to utilize hybrid vehicles as appropriate, and to “right size” the city’s fleet of more than 400 vehicles.
  • Changed pick up routes for 60% of the city’s 30,000 trash customers in 2010 in order to be more efficient and save money. Click here to learn more.
  • Secured federal grants to fund retrofits for energy efficiency, water efficiency, and solar energy measures throughout city facilities. This includes including updated lighting, plumbing, water heater controls and thermostats at several city facilities, as well as solar panels at the Fleet facility on River Road and replacing the flat roof over Thalian Hall with a more energy efficient roof.
  • Named as one of eight North Carolina cities designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. This award is presented only to communities that have shown a significant commitment to bicycling. The city has taken steps to become more bike/pedestrian friendly over the last few years with the development of the Cross-City Trail and the River to Sea Bikeway.
  • Completed approximately 11 miles of the Cross-City Trail so far. When complete, the Cross-City Trail will be approximately 15 miles long and run from Wade Park to the Wrightsville Beach Drawbridge. Visit to learn more.

In October, the City won the Burgess Sustainability Award, which is presented annually to honor cities that have taken the initiative to conserve energy and natural resources at the local government level.
