Wilmington's newest fire station

Seagate opens its doors to area residents
Date Posted:  9/29/2008

The City held an open house at the new Seagate Fire Station (Station 10) on Saturday, September 27. Mayor Bill Saffo was among those on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony. Many of the firefighters from the former Sea Gate Volunteer Fire Station were also at the event.

Attendees toured the new station and its equipment and met the fire personnel. Free child safety seat inspections and fire prevention information was available, and the children were treated to a visit from Res-Q the Clown, who helps teach youngsters fire safety.

The Seagate Fire Station is located at 6102 Oleander Drive and opened in early September. Significant improvements to the local stormwater system, combined with a unique site design, allowed the station to be built on the site of the old Seagate station. The $3.3 million, 8,300 square foot fire station was completed on time and on budget and has a staff of 5 full-time personnel per shift.

Construction of the station allows the city to better serve residents in the annexed areas and maintain its Class 2 rating, which reflects both superior equipment and manpower, as well as quick response times to fires. A Class 2 rating means lower homeowners' insurance rates for Wilmington residents.
