In its third year, the center generated 5,731 room nights for area hotels.

For the current fiscal year 2013-14, the Wilmington Convention Center looks forward to hosting a variety of events at the center, as well as the accompanying number of hotel room nights those events generate for surrounding hotels. So far, the center has more than 100 events tentatively or definitely booked, including 11 conventions.

The Convention Center has also earned a number of awards in 2013 that featured Chef Scott Frazzetta. The Chef participated in Epicurean Evening, a competitive food competition fundraiser put on by the Methodist Home for Children. Chef Frazzetta brought home the highest honor - BEST IN SHOW - along with the Best in Taste and Best in Presentation awards. His award-winning dish was a seared sea scallop over saffron risotto with champagne spinach, decoratively complimented by a tomato tortilla wing.

The Center is LEED certified, meaning it is a "green" or environmentally-friendly building.

Green Facts

The center has several green features that help the environment and save money, including:

  • redevelopment of a former industrial railroad yard;
  • innovative underground systems that uses sand to filter stormwater runoff before it goes into the Cape Fear River;
  • a white roof that reflects the sun and reduces heat gain;
  • water efficient landscaping;
  • special glass that limits heating and cooling loss;
  • plumbing fixtures that use about half the amount of water of traditional fixtures
  • efficient lighting and HVAC systems

Along with LEED Silver Certification from the US Green Building Council, the Center received the Engineering Excellence Companies of NC. The Center received the award for the overall design of the site, which is specially designed to protect the riverfront ecosystem and minimize the environmental impact while also rehabilitating a former industrial site.
