Code Enforcement

Code enforcement has a responsibility to enforce City ordinances that:

  • provide a safe community and vibrant neighborhoods; and,
  • promote a healthy and safe environment for citizens and visitors

In addition, we are responsible for increasing public understanding of the City's policies and procedures, through community events and participation, and various media outlets.

(b)    When any of the following conditions exist on a public right-of-way between the property line and the curb or edge of the roadway and threatens, limits, impairs or creates a hazard to the use of the right-of-way by vehicles or pedestrians, such a condition is declared to be dangerous and prejudicial to the public health or safety and to constitute a severe nuisance:

        (1)    Any accumulation of animal or organic matter that is offensive by virtue of odors or which is inhabited by rats, mice, snakes or vermin which may be dangerous to the public health.

        (2)    Any accumulation of trash, garbage or other waste not in compliance with the provisions of this chapter.

        (3)    Any accumulation of hazardous refuse or concentration of combustible items such as mattresses, boxes, paper, housewares, tires, clothes, or furniture.

        (4)    Any accumulation of appliances, glass, building materials, demolition materials or rubbish.

Illegal Dumping is handled by the Police Department. Refer to City Ordinance Sec. 10-17. Dumping or littering on public or private property. Phone: 910-343-3600

Noise is handled by the Police Department. Refer to City Ordinance Sec. 6-26. Phone: 910-343-3600

The Zoning Department handles banners, boats, building without a permit, commercial vehicles, home occupancy certificates, occupancy limitations, trailers, and right of way signs. Phone: 910-254-0900

We participate in the University/Community Relations Task Force at UNCW.
