On Thursday, February 5, 2009, a prescribed burn was successfully completed of approximately 10 acres at Halyburton Park.
The burn was conducted to:
- Reduce the risk of wildfire in the park
- Promote Long Leaf Pine and Wiregrass, species that need fire to survive
- Restore a natural element of the Long Leaf Pine ecosystem
- Improve habitat for wildlife
These objectives were accomplished while minimizing the impact to citizens in the community. The identified burn units would be burned every 3-5 years on a rotation to mimic the historic occurrence of fires.
