About Prescribed Burns:
With a prescribed burn, fire is reintroduced to a fire dependant ecosystem through prescribed burns.
Three winter dormant season burns have been conducted in February 2009, February 2010 and February 2013 burning a total of approximately 55 acres combined. Dormant season burns occur during the winter and are conducted primarily to reduce fuel levels and have minimum impact in reducing hardwood species. These burns were conducted safely and successfully while minimizing the impact to the public.
The next scheduled burn will take place in Spring 2014. The prescribed burn will take place only when weather conditions are favorable. The exact date of the burn will be determined by weather conditions. The burn will be conducted by the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources.
