Inspections of businesses are required by North Carolina general statutes based on the type of occupancy.
Schedule for inspections:
- One year: hazardous, institutional, high rise, assembly and residential (except for one and two dwellings and only interior common areas of dwelling units of multi-family occupancies)
- Two year: industrial and educational (except public schools)
- Three year: business, merchantile, storage, churches and synagogues

All permitted businesses are inspected annually. The permits are required by the North Caroilina Fire Prevention Code. A fee is charged depending on the type of operation or storage in a business. Examples of permits include but are not limited to: places of assembly, repair garages and storage of flammable and combustible liquids.
