Ladder Training
The Wilmington Fire Department Training Division is responsible for the coordination and delivery of training to department personnel.

There are currently 58 instructors certified by the N.C. Office of State Fire Marshal in the Wilmington Fire Department who are responsible for the daily training of firefighters at each individual fire station.

There are three designated training stations with classrooms of varying sizes within the department:

  • Fire Headquarters (up to 40 students)
  • Station 7 (25 students)
  • Station 8 (20 students)

All three classrooms are provided with full multimedia capabilities.

The department utilizes the Public Safety Training Facility, which was jointly funded by the City of Wilmington, New Hanover County and Cape Fear Community College. This facility houses a training tower, commercial burn building, residential burn building, driving pad, classrooms, simulators, drafting pit and other modern training facilities.

Training Division staff provides instruction in all disciplines of the fire service, including a four-month recruit academy, firefighting strategy and tactics, incident management, EMS in-service hours, technical rescue, water rescue, hazardous materials, professional development, driver operator training and live fire exercises.

The Wilmington Fire Department is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to deliver training while ensuring firefighters are able to do their multi-faceted jobs efficiently and safely.
