Citizen's Fire Academy

The Wilmington Fire Department’s Citizen’s Fire Academy is a learning program for those who would like to know more about the life of a firefighter.  This free six week academy is designed for community members who are interested in the workings of the Wilmington Fire Department and have a genuine interest in making our city a safer place to live. The program will briefly introduce departmental structure, personnel, equipment, budget and operations.  The majority of the Citizen’s Fire Academy program will provide knowledge and hands-on experiences with professional firefighters in fire prevention, rescue, communications, hazardous materials identification, extinguisher training, basic first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and tactical and water rescue. The program ends with an exciting graduation on a Saturday morning May 7 with exercises such as riding in on a fire engine, pulling a line and extinguishing a kitchen fire, search through a smokey environment for a victim, ride in the bucket of the tower truck. All really cool photo opportunities where your family and friends are encouraged to attend and cheer you on. Lunch and a graduation ceremony follows.

Class size is limited. Spring session will begin on March 29th – May 3rd  (Tuesday evenings) from 6 – 9 p.m.  For more information and/or application contact Andrea Good, Human Resources Coordinator, City of Wilmington Fire Department: andrea.good@wilmingtonnc.gov or 910-772-4131
