The facility is operated for the recreation and entertainment needs for the people of Wilmington and the surrounding areas, and is provided as a venue for performances, programs, exhibitions, festivals and other activities. Greenfield Amphitheater is the home to Cape Fear Shakespeare Festival which hosts productions each year.

Renovations to the Greenfield Amphitheater have been completed.
A ribbon cutting ceremony took place on May 28. The first event in the newly renovated facility, which includes an expanded cover for the stage, an adjoining stage house with shower and dressing facilities, new concessions and restroom buildings and new landscaping, was the 16th annual performance of Shakespeare on the Green in June. The $1.2 million project was completed within budget and is the second major Parks & Greenspace Bond project to be completed.
