The city's first phase of "Big Blue" recycling cart delivery has been completed, with carts provided to more than 17,000 recycling customers over the last two weeks. Some delivery corrections will take place today through Wednesday. After that, carts will be delivered to recycling customers who made a request for a blue cart after Nov. 1.
So far, the city has received requests from more than 750 customers who had not previously recycled. The city offers voluntary recycling at no additional charge for customers who request it and is delivering carts free of charge to those customers. Anyone who is a current recycling customer and didn't get a cart, or got the wrong size, should call the city's Solid Waste Division at 341-7875.
Any customer who wants a cart but does not currently recycle is asked to call the city at 341-7875 to get on a waiting list. The city will try to deliver carts to those on the waiting list by Christmas.
Residents are encouraged to use their blue cart as soon as it is delivered.
Beginning Jan. 7, 2013, recycling will be picked up every other week on the same day as trash collection, which will continue to be picked up weekly. Trash and yard waste will still be picked up weekly. Weekly recycling pick-up will continue until Jan. 7, 2013, when the new every-other-week schedule begins.
The city will save $220,000 in annual manpower costs with the new schedule, and expects the amount of materials to be recycled to increase by 15-20 percent.
