Holiday Safety Tips

Holiday Safety Tips

Cooking tips from WFD
With Thanksgiving right around the corner Wilmington Fire Department would like to remind you to “Cook with Caution”. Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fire and home fire injuries.

  • Keep a 3 foot “KID FREE ZONE” around appliances that are hot. This ensures children are not playing near hot liquids or other foods that could burn them.

  • If you are frying, boiling, grilling food please stay with it at all times. It only takes seconds for a fire to start and burn out of control.

  • If you are baking or roasting food in the oven please stay in the house and check on your food often. Try setting a timer to remind yourself to check the oven.

  • To prevent burns to your hands remember to use oven mitts instead of pot holders.

If a fire does start in your kitchen please remember to evacuate the home and call 911 before you try to extinguish the fire. Its most important to make sure everyone makes it out safely before using your fire extinguisher. The method to use your fire extinguisher is PASS. Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.

Seasonal Safety Tips from WFD

The Wilmington Fire Department offers these seasonal fire safety tips:

Tree safety
  • Choose a freshly cut tree (if needles fall off after striking the stump on a firm surface, the tree is too dry).
  • Keep tree away from heat sources.
  • Keep tree well-watered – it could absorb a gallon of water the first day.
  • Do not burn tree branches in fireplace or woodstove.

Lighting
  • Replace any worn or damaged light sets or any set that is more that 4-5 years old.
  • Use only light strings approved by a recognized safety-testing agency such as U.L.
  • Avoid overloading electrical circuits or creating "octopus" connections.
  • Disconnect lights at bedtime or when unattended.

Decorations
  • Use only non-flammable or flame retardant decorations.
  • Never burn discarded wrappings and packages in a woodstove or fireplace.
